Senior Principal Research Scientist in Exploring Marine Biodiversity Team based in Western Australia
My interest in the reproductive processes of marine organisms commenced in the 1980s and has included continuing research with corals in both hemispheres. During the period 1990-94 my research interests extended into the developing field of Marine Biotechnology, investigating industrial utilization of marine organisms in Japan and exposure to advanced reproductive technologies as a QEII Fellow at Adelaide University's School of Medicine, prior to joining the Australian Institute of Marine Science in 1994. While basic research on coral ecology continues to be an area of interest, the majority of subsequent effort has been associated with marine seabed biodiversity surveys. In north-western Australia studies, including offshore emergent reefs, submerged shoals on the Sahul shelf and fringing reefs along the Kimberley coast, are servicing the needs of marine management agencies focused on conservation and providing industry with targeted research underpinning sustainability.

1987: PhD in Marine Biology, James Cook University.

Current Research Activities
Current research is focussed on exploratory surveys to uncover little studied coastal and offshore habitats in north-west Australia and studies of coral biology related to early life histories. Expeditions to shelf & near-shore environments of the north-west, especially the diverse shoal ecosystems in offshore areas of the Sahul Shelf, the highly diverse and complex fringing coral reefs of the Kimberley coast is bringing recognition to the globally significant diversity of benthic marine habitats in the northwest and Timor Sea.
