Research Scientist within the Sustainable Coastal Ecosystems and Industries in Tropical Australia Program.
Background
During my PhD on sponge ecology and aquaculture, obtained in 2000 from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, I worked at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research doing biodiversity surveys of marine protected areas and bio-prospecting to discover new drug compounds. Afterwards, I spent 3 years doing a postdoctoral fellowship at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, USA, determining the feeding requirements of sessile marine invertebrates for drug production. In 2004, I started a 4-year postdoctoral fellowship at AIMS focused on sponge conservation and ecology leading to the creation of a bath sponge aquaculture industry for remote coastal communities. In 2008, I started a research scientist position at Blue Ocean Institute, USA, examining the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and investigating the environmental sustainability of wild-caught and farm-raised seafood. I returned to Australia in 2012 to take up my present position at AIMS.

Current Research Activities
My main research interest is investigating the human impacts on coastal marine ecosystems, with my current research focused on determining the effects of dredging pressures on corals and sponges.
